Playing with Fire is a Kirk/Spock story by Charlotte Frost.

It was published in the print zine Within the Mirror #6.

Summary

"Stranded when their shuttlecraft crashes, Kirkʼs feelings of aloneness intensify when Spock sickens, leading to Kirkʼs decision to open himself to Spock."

The Author Comments

I think this mirror universe story was inspired by the idea of Spock coughing while he and Kirk are trapped in a cave. The kind of thing that can get on an impatient man’s nerves. I don’t know what happens after that, but I assume sex eventually ensues. *g* [1]

Reactions and Reviews

1992

A believable scenario with Kirk realizing how much he needs someone, but I thought that Spock was more realistically portrayed. [2]

This is an excellent 22-page story. The basic plot is a/u where Kirk and Spock are stranded on a planet. At the beginning Spock is ill, and the ruthless boleroed [3] Kirk must care for him. The writing, characters, and plot development are well done and realistic. The dialogue is snappy.

The title comes from Spock's comment, "Surely, you realize I would not go so far as to play with fire... unless I were willing to risk getting burned." Later on, Kirk will refer to this. What he says is really cute.

Everything is great about this story except for one nit-picking thing that shouldn't have bothered me nearly as much as it did. RIND (as in melon rind) is misspelled. [4]
