Reactions and Reviews
Aliens give Spock an android programmed to make him happy, and Kirk is jealous. Hotness and hilarity ensue. This one should be read just for the scene in which the android offers a debauched Kirk and Spock a washcloth *gleeful* [1]
And now, after all the angsty stories I've recommended, it's time for something a bit more lighthearted. Jesmihr does stories in a variety of moods, from romance to humor to more serious themes. In "Personal Effects", the Edinian people, grateful for Spock's help in repairing their computer system, present him with a gift: an android. A fully functional android. Kirk assumes Spock will react to this gift with either embarrassment or distaste. Kirk assumes Spock is going to return it right away. Kirk assumes wrong. Spock is quite fascinated with his new mechanical toy. And Kirk - suddenly, ferociously jealous – can't stop thinking about what Spock and the android might be doing in the privacy of Spock's quarters.
I love the humor in this piece - humor which is beautifully balanced by the unexpressed longing both men feel for each other but have not, as yet, been able to communicate. [2]
I‘ve come to appreciate this author‘s work now that she also writes for zines, but I haven‘t read much of what she has on the net, so when I came across this story I wanted to give it a try. I was glad I did!Spock has spent some time off the ship aiding an alien culture with his computer expertise. Upon returning to the Enterprise, the technologically advanced race decides to show their appreciation in tangible form. They present Spock with an android especially created just for him whose only reason for existence is to make him happy. Kirk has anxiously been awaiting his first officer‘s return. He has fallen in love with Spock, missed him terribly, and finds himself utterly overcome with jealousy at what he sees is a rival for Spock‘s affection. My favorite part has to be the wonderful discussion as to why the captain says Spock can‘t possibly keep the android, and Spock‘s exact quoting of regulations to prove he can. Written with a deft, light touch, the story is expertly crafted, smooth and very entertaining. Watching the captain pull victory from defeat once more tickled me no end.
Read it and enjoy! [3]
Spock receives an unexpected gift. Funny as hell, that Spock gets a male android and Kirk is totally jealous. [4]
