Reactions and Reviews

1998

Words flow so gently in this story of unfolding love that you don’t realize you’re being carried along until you reach the warm, satisfying conclusion — which isn’t really a conclusion at all, but a beginning.

Commencing with Kirk’s interrupted declaration of love on the observation deck, three weeks of a PR mission unfold, not allowing for any private time. There are the inevitable beautiful women and the requisite disappointment for Spock, but without the angst and the helplessness so prevalent in such dramas. And this is meant as a compliment, because the author never lets the reader down, there is always something there to remind that it’s going to work out. A nice departure that requires much less kleenex.

When the mission ends, the misunderstandings are brought quickly to a close — with an underlying trust for one another that isn’t easily shaken.

Like the born decision-maker he is, Kirk takes full advantage of the first uninterrupted moment, but it takes Spock just a bit off-guard. This is told with such marvelous simplicity: “Spock was stunned. Wildly elated. Scared out of his wits. And confused.” Don’t you experience every emotion, every surging feeling, every mental convolution in just those few words? Like a trip down the rapids! [1]

2001

Another cute story from the master of the same, who has more pen names than you can shake a stick at. Kirk standing next to his first officer in the observation deck is just about to pop the question—once he can get Spock to agree to go with him on shore leave. Alas, Spock is committed to the ship during the down time because the quartermaster has fractured his femur and Spock must take his place. Then Kirk decides to grasp the private moment they have right then. He reaches up to cup “the angular face, gazing deeply into the dark eyes.” And of course the captain is called over the intercom at that moment.

That’s just in the first two pages, and it’s a hint of what is to come: lots of complications, and temptations, that will interfere with the course of true love. In this case, the Enterprise has been “assigned to provide assistance for a series of Via-Galactic Holo productions.” (This makes me wonder what battleship commanders in the present day think when they get similar orders. Does it ever happen?) So movie starlets, including a Deltan, come on board the ship, and Kirk spends too much time with the diva, so that everyone, including Spock thinks he’s having an affair with her, when in fact he is keeping himself for Spock.

Of course we have a happy ending, one I particularly like since the author links it to two other weddings taking place in the Federation. [2]

2006

A happy romp with a filming crew aboard the Enterprise, the crew all slavering to jump into bed with the vid-stars, and Kirk steadfastly resisting Deltan pheromones to preserve himself for Spock - to whom he keeps trying to propose, but keeps getting interrupted. Spock, naturally, misunderstands and assumes Kirk has succumbed. [3]
