An Original Soundtrack, sometimes also called an OST, is the music from the original score of a film or television show. This music is often collected together and sold in CD or streaming form. The designation original distinguishes the OST from these derivative works.
Such compositions can be exclusively instrumental or contain vocals, being played by orchestras or singers, famous duos and/or bands even by the actors/voice actors involved in the media. Some of these songs performed with vocals by actors or singers get to gain more notoriety than the show itself, and can be considered an important part of the fan cult.
OSTs have become popular sources of music for Anime Music Videos and Vids, often being used in its original version, or modified in mashups or remixes, the best known versions being the theme nightcore or slowed+reverb.
In some countries, it is not uncommon for variations on the music to also be produced, using computer software, different instruments, or covers. Many of these variations are made to accommodate translations of the compositions with vocals or for reasons of different openings and endings or even for censorship or parental guide.
