OP is the standard term for the opening song/credits of an anime series. Longer series may have multiple OPs, often performed by well-known bands or pop artists. In some anime clubs, it's common for members to sing along with the OPs as they watch, though OPs may also be skipped in some clubs to save time.
Fansubs
Fansub groups may produce karaoke subtitles to accompany the music of a series; if so, the most complex effects are usually reserved for the OP.
In the quest for smaller file sizes, some fansubbers switched to ordered chapters. These allowed the fansubbers to separate out the OP and ED from each episode and only upload one copy of each, to reduce download file sizes and overall storage space required on High Definition releases. However, ordered chapters can only be played in certain software, like CCCP or MPlayer.[1] Many newer fans did not realize this and thought fansub groups were deliberately cutting out the songs from each series.[2]
