Reactions and Reviews
1992
I think that Kay is one of the best in her ability to capture the characterizations of both Kirk and Spock. There is never a time when I think they wouldn't say or do that in a particular scene. This story was filled with great descriptions and dialogue such as on page 130, McCoy saying,
- "Don't sneak up on me, Spock."
- "I don't sneak," the Vulcan replied.
And my favorite on page 141 when Kirk says,
- "I'm all yours."
- "Yes you are." Spock affirmed.
That's the possessive Vulcan that I love.
The story is filled with meticulous details including the ceremony along with what everyone was wearing and the description of Kirk "striding purposely across the room like a storm front..."
I enjoyed everything about this story, but I'm never disappointed in Kay's work. Nice sex scene, too. [1]
I love mysteries and surprises! In this story the author puts us 35 pages to the rack, before she gives away what purpose and function that Guard has! It was thrilling! Many times I was tempted to look at the end, to solve the mystery, but I didn't! A very nice story — especially the "happy end" was exquisite! [2]
