Reactions and Reviews

An odd perspective defines this story. Kirk is speaking— as though to Spock—and yet it is more like his thoughts than his words. The unusual part is that he is addressing Spock. It works ok, but is hard to describe. There are some insights into how Kirk felt learning that Spock could be reclaimed from Genesis and about losing his son. It's fairly unemotional, not what you might expect. I do love the way they find each other in the end and Spock says as they prepare to bond: "There will be no return from this journey, Jim." [1]

This is a well written, strong and wonderfully immediate story, in first person Kirk, opening with him looking for Spock at Starfleet HQ. He can't find him, and is talking to Spock in his head.

I couldn't tell exactly what time period, but I think around ST4, because there are bits of things in his thoughts about events during various movie times. They used to be lovers but are now just friends. Has Spock left him? He goes home to his apartment...someone is there...it's Spock. A strong, sexy Vulcan in this story, no longer willing to wait to bond. Passionate kisses...and lots of sexy stuff.

A great story—dramatic, concise, intense. [2]

Lovely short story of Kirk’s thoughts after Spock’s fal-tor-pan. So many beautiful things and so haunting are Kirk’s memories when Sarek came to him.

Then he remembers when he found Spock alive and he called him Jim. And so beautiful: “I’d forgotten how tall you are, the warmth of your body, the timbre of your voice. And your strength. Now how could I have forgotten that? But kisses like yours I never forgot. I must have relived them a million times until I shut out the memory.”

Spock comes to Kirk and he says: “We will bond.” I loved: “My nakedness against the heavy silk of your tunic is a touch as sensuous as any of flesh on flesh and you know it.” [3]
