Ruby/Penny, also known as Nuts and Dolts, is a RWBY femslash pairing involving Ruby Rose and Penny Polendina
Canon
Ruby and Penny first meet in the fifteenth episode of RWBY Volume 1. Although Ruby is a bit uncomfortable with Penny's strange behavior, the two girls quickly become friends.
In the next episode, Penny joins the fight against Roman Torchwick, coming to Ruby's aid after she is knocked down.
In the third episode of Volume 2, Penny reveals to Ruby that she is "not a real girl", and shows Ruby the metal beneath the torn skin on her palms. Ruby accepts Penny as a true person, and their friendship grows stronger.
In the fifth episode of Volume 3, Penny hugs Ruby and tells her that she wants to stay at Beacon Academy with Ruby and her other friends.
A few episodes later, Penny is destroyed. Ruby is devastated when she sees this, and falls to her knees. Later, Ruby uses one of Penny's discarded swords in battle.
In the first episode of Volume 7, Ruby is reunited with a rebuilt version of Penny, who remembers her and hugs her.
On the RWBY: Volume 8 Soundtrack, there is a song from Penny's perspective called "Friend", which is about her friendship with Ruby.
Fandom
Nuts and Dolts is one of the earlier Ruby ships thanks to Penny's introduction in Volume 1. Shippers were understandably upset with Penny's death in Volume 3, with some choosing to drop the series as a result. However, many still believed that Penny could return in a later volume as being a robot meant she could be rebuilt after her "death". In Volume 7 this did happen, which brought much celebration in the Nuts and Dolts tags at the time.
Tropes and Fanon
- Rebuilt: A popular theory and trope during Volumes 4-6 was Penny being rebuilt and reunited with Ruby. Some fanworks went on to explored if Penny would remember Ruby or if she would be a complete new person who only shared the same design as Penny.
- Robots: Penny is originally an android created by her father.
