Reactions and Reviews

1994

Kirk and Spock are in a ceremonial place on Vulcan, announcing their bond. So lovely, but just Kirk's daydream! Darn. Kirk notices his fantasies about Spock now seem to include an element of permanence. This is a believable progression. He realizes he is in love, but will put Spock's happiness first, and believes Spock is content with just friendship.

The Issovians are difficult, touchy, easily offended, a warrior caste society; they refuse to negotiate for minerals with businessmen or diplomats, so Kirk gets the job.

On Issovius, Kirk starts sneezing, ruining the negotiations- Turns out he is allergic to their fur, and they would be offended if they knew, later, Kirk is inebriated from medication and after beaming up, he almost tells Spock of his love. He doesn't remember this later, but McCoy informs him he made a pass at Spock. A sweet and funny scene. Kirk having to deal with this.

The negotiations must continue, and McCoy suggests a meld in order to control Kirk's allergic reactions. Kirk is flustered, wants to refuse; but they do meld, Spock having assured that he would only touch that part of Kirk's mind having to do with the allergic reaction.

Later, the negotiations finalized, they attend a wedding, which reminds Kirk of his dream. Still in the meld, Spock sees Kirk's fantasy and reflexively withdraws; and Kirk sneezes in the middle of the wedding. I love how Kirk decides on the immediate, straightforward approach. "Did you or did you not see what was in my mind?" A heart-racing moment. "I did." Kirk doesn't understand Spock's calm reaction, then Spock relieves him of his misery. Delicious moments. Spock has admitted his own emotions but Kirk is now not sure what to do. Is the reality really what he wants? In Kirk's silence, Spock begins to think he himself has been mistaken and has made a fool of himself with his admission. Quite a stimulating tension here. Ends with a kiss. Sigh... Very nice story. 5/5. I may be a little biassed because I love cats, but I really enjoyed this one. It was funny at parts and wholesome at others and was generally a great time.[2]
