Common Tropes and Fanon
- Trans!Nora: In the lead-up to Volume 7's premiere in 2019 many of RWBY's characters, including Nora, where shown to have new outfits and weapon upgrades. Fans were quick to note that Nora's outfit had added some additional light blue elements and now resembled the Trans Pride flag. Some members of CRWBY began liking tweets about trans Nora which helped escalate the discussion around if the colours were intentionally used and that Nora could be shown canonical trans.[1][2] The topic soon became controversial with meta being written for and against Nora being trans and unfortunately was mired with transphobic commets.[3] The meta essay, Representation matters; but RWBY comes first, was the stickied topic on /r/RWBY the week surrounding the design reveals and a plethora of posts on Twitter and Tumblr were made. However, after the character May Marigold was introduced in Volume 7, May's VA tweeted that May was RWBY's "very first onscreen trans character."[4]
- Maiden: Once the Winter Maiden's name was revealed to be Fria, some speculated that it was a nod to the Norse Goddess, Freya and since Nora is based on the Norse God Thor, then Nora could be her granddaughter and next inheritor to the Winter Maiden's powers.
