Needs of the One is a Kirk/Spock vid by Mary Van Deusen to filks by Julia Ecklar.

Reactions and Reviews

This is one of my absolute favorite vids. Julia Ecklar did wonderfully inventive filks which Mary then paired with video scenes. (You may have read one or more of Julia’s professional Star Trek novels. She wrote as part of the team that called itself L.A. Graf, which stood for Let’s All Get Rich and Famous.)

Set to the death scene in ST II, Needs of the One tells of Spock’s thoughts as he leaves Kirk: “I was difficult, silent, and stubborn, And I wish I could now reach your hand.” He thanks his captain for his friendship that has meant so very much, and tries to explain his choice: “There were none left but old friends and children, I could not let their deaths weigh on me.” He knows Kirk will mourn him: “I cannot take your sorrow away, But please not for my loss, As the choice was my own, And we must all face death in our own way.” The vid ends with Spock promising : “I will never be far from your side.”

A lovely, moving vid that is definitely worth having in your collection. [1]
