Summary

"Kirk and Spock make love while hiding in a haystack from the Klingons."

Excerpt

"Our hideout appears to have been used for such a purpose before. We have to squeeze into the small burrow that must have provided excellent concealment for children of the small, humanoid natives of this world. For adults of Vulcan and Terran physiques, the squeeze isexcessive indeed. The captain had obviously had experiences with this off means of secreting oneself, and unquestioningly help him pile loose handfuls of the vegetation he calls hay into the short tunne lthrough which we have crawled. Above the rustling and our labored breathing I hear the irregularclatter of the approaching Klingon patrol. Placing my hand on Jim's shoulder, I whisper, "They are here."

Reactions and Reviews

Oh, this one's fun. Klingons after them at a settlement on some planet, Kirk and Spock have to hide quickly, and quick-thinking farmboy dives into a convenient burrow in a haystack. This is told in first person present tense Spock, which is (in my opinion) a weird and sometimes jarring POV (the present tense, not the first person); but it's nice for this story which is just one big present-tense moment (and a tense present-tense moment at that).

Spock has to push Kirk flat down to protect him as a Klingon sword comes jabbing into the haystack. Lying front to front, of course they both have responses to being so close.... Sometimes I think Spock wouldn't be so innocent as to mistake arousal for some sort of malaise. Maybe he would do so if this was the very first time he ever felt physical, genital arousal, but.... However, he catches on quickly, so it's fine.

I appreciate the economy of words here, but a story such as this is almost like a vignette, with no action per se, like a portrait stirring to life...and so we need to see that picture clearly. We needed to be told the approximate dimensions of this burrow, not just that it was a tight space. What are we to picture—a little cubic thing, or a long, narrow passage? Can they only lie down, or sit up, or what? When they were lying front to front, I was picturing it as a tunnel-shaped dugout, but then Spock kneels between Kirk's legs (to massage a cramp in Kirk's thigh), so it must be of a size that they could sit up in it. Also, I wondered how Spock could see the bulge at Kirk's groin; I thought it would be dark in there. This wasn't described until later, with the shafts of light poking in through the straw, which is really nice, and could have been said sooner.

Anyway, getting past all that, ahh.... It was sensual, lovely, erotic, when they begin touching. Hot, hot, the necessary silence adding to the heat. Just one touch by each of them, and the mutual desire is unmistakable. They manage to get naked (even their boots?). Lovely wordless sex, good stuff, especially the 69. I loved it, except it bothered me that they never kissed.

What a warm, sweet story. I can feel it even now as I think back on it—those moments of no words as they emerge (dressed) from the haystack in the dusk, the Klingons having long since gone.... [1]
