MyAnimeList (MAL for short) is a website community built around cataloging and rating the anime and manga that each user has watched/read. The site was launched in November 2004 by Garrett Gyssler (username Xinil).[1][2] The site is highly active, with users socializing via site-wide forums, forums specific to each anime/manga entry, and clubs formed around various topics. The site included a directory of links to fansub groups until mid-2018 when this was removed by the development team "[a]s part of ongoing efforts to support the anime and manga industry".[3]
History
The site was maintained solely by Xinil until 2008.[4] On August 4 2008, CraveOnline, a men's entertainment and lifestyle site owned by AtomicOnline, purchased MyAnimeList for an undisclosed sum of money.[5] In 2015, the Tokyo-based social platform developer DeNA Co., Ltd. announced that it had purchased MyAnimeList from CraveOnline, and that they would partner with Anime Consortium Japan to stream anime on the service, via Daisuki.net.[6][7]
MyAnimeList announced in April 2016 that they had embedded episodes from Crunchyroll and Hulu directly onto the site, with over 20,000 episodes being made available on the site.[8]
In April 2017, MyAnimeList added The King's Avatar, its first donghua, to the site's database.[9]
On March 8 2018, MyAnimeList opened an online manga store, in partnership with Kodansha Comics and Viz Media, allowing users to purchase manga digitally from the website. The service originally launched in Canada but later expanded to United States, the United Kingdom, and several other English-speaking countries.[10]
MAL became inaccessible on May 28 2018[11] when site staff took it offline for maintenance, due to security and privacy concerns.[4][12] The site operators also disabled API for third-party apps, rendering them unusable.[4] The moves were done in efforts to conform to the European Union's GDPR program.[4][12]
Fans expressed their agitation during the extended downtime.

Anime Maru, a parody news site, posted an article titled Man Unable to Remember if He’s Seen ‘Last Exile’ Due to MyAnimeList Maintenance.[15]
On June 2 2018, portions of the site came back online. The full site and all functions were not available until September 13 2018.[3]
