Last Exile is a steampunk fantasy anime released in 2003. A follow-up sequel series called Last Exile -Fam the Silver Wing- premiered in 2016 and introduced several new characters.
Canon
The series follows Lavie and Klaus, two young pilots surviving on odd jobs and the occasional race. When they decide to complete a dying courier's last assignment (despite it being much more dangerous than their usual errands), they must deliver a young girl named Alvis to a famed battleship called the Silvana. Soon, they become caught in the middle of an ongoing conflict between the two nations waging a never-ending war over their world, as well as The Guild, a group of beings who oversee all ship battles and look upon humans with disdain. It quickly becomes clear that Alvis holds a key to unlocking a bigger mystery.
