Mountain Pass is a Jim/Blair story by Lady Ra.

It was published in Bedtime Stories #1 and is online.

Reactions and Reviews

When Jim's senses go online, he retreats to a nearby mountain in the hopes of getting them under control. There he meets Blair Sandburg, a consultant with the Seattle PD who is on the run from an insane sentinel named Alex Barnes. Lots of hurt/comfort, bonding issues, and Blair being awesome ensue.

This story contains the best version of sentinel/guide bonding that I've ever seen, primarily because the bond is one of *equals*. The guide isn't relegated to a subservient sexual position (in fact, there's no such thing as positional requirements), there is equal attraction between the sentinel and guide, and there's just as much talk of Jim changing his life to be with Blair as there is of Blair changing his life to be with Jim.

Speaking of Blair, he totally kicks ass in this fic. Confident, competent, and self-sufficient, he is the exact opposite of the lacking in all common sense Blair that appears so often in Sentinel fanfic. And, while I do have a soft spot for idiot Blair, I have just as much love for the competent (and, honestly, more canon-compliant) version. All in all, a good fic for those who like strong protagonists in an equal relationship, all salted with a heavy dose of h/c.[1]

AUs can be a lot of fun, and this one stands out for the great interaction between Jim and Blair. Blair's been burned badly by the whole Sentinel thing in this story before he ever meets Jim, which makes him much more self-protective than he was in the series and pushes Jim to respect him more. But this subtle shift in the dynamic meshes perfectly with the characters' personalities and makes for a delicious read that I go back to over and over. [2]
