Morning Musume '25 (モーニング娘。'25) [read as "Morning Musume Two Five], formerly known as just Morning Musume (モーニング娘。), is a J-pop girl group under Hello!Project that currently consists of 12 members.
History
Morning Musume was formed by producer Tsunku during a competition on the TV program AYASAN for a solo female singer. The five runners-up from the competition were grouped together to become the first generation of Morning Musume. The name of the group translates to "Morning Daughters" or "Morning Girls." [1]
Morning Musume follows a generational system, with members periodically joining while others leave the group ("graduate"). This has resulted in the group being continuously active since its inception, with a rotating cast of members. As of 2025, there have been 17 generations, which consist of between 1 to 5 members.
In 2014, Morning Musume started a new naming system where each year, the final two digits of the calendar year are put behind the group's name. Thus, 2014's lineup is known as モーニング娘。'14 and the 2015 lineup was known as モーニング娘。'15.
