Reactions and Reviews
I suppose most of the K/S world knows by now that this story is actually a rather old one that was written by an author who used to be active in K/S but is no longer. It was written yeas ago but never published, and it’s a happy happenstance that Kathy Resch found it and was able to print it in T’hy’la 24. I do like Academy stories! Here Spock meets Kirk at the Academy, though their typical ages are reversed, in that Kirk is a year ahead of Spock. He has volunteered to host a first year cadet, to be their roommate, and of course he draws Spock. Lucky Kirk! There’s a cute opening sequence with Finnegan and a good characterization of Gary Mitchell. How I love to hate Gary Mitchell!I also like how Janice Lester is woven into the story. Yeah, I love to hate her, too. I don’t go in for Spock crying, even under the circumstances of this story, but it is a tough situation he finds himself in with Kirk. The pacing of the sex scene is terrific—or maybe I should say the pacing leading up to the sex scene is terrific, for the author does make us wait for it. Worth the wait, I’d say. This story is illustrative of a pet peeve I’ve got, though, and that is that a man, especially one with little experience as Spock has in this story, can achieve orgasm easily through anal penetration only, with little or no stimulation of his penis. Just doesn’t make sense to me.... I suppose you could explain it as being the impetuosity of adolescence. But it’s a sexy sex scene nevertheless.
There’s a sweet ending to this story, too. Not a major story or anything earth shattering, but it leaves you smiling.[1]
"Moonlight Through your Hair" by Cynthia is an 18 page a/u story. I'm glad the editor finally found the author and got her permission to publish this story after holding it for 15 years. That must be some type of record.I frankly don't think "my" Kirk and "my" Spock would ever act the way it happens in the story at various places, but once I tell myself that this is totally a/u and the writer can do anything she wants to with the characters, then I can accept the story and enjoy it. It's an interesting view of the two men, and it's a good sexy story. I recommend it. Plot spoiler paragraph just below:
I just (and here is a slight plot spoiler so you might want to skip this final short paragraph—yes, you really might just want to do that) don't think that any woman would ever tell "my" Kirk that he didn't satisfy her and that he had a "wet noodle" for a penis. No way in hell, actually.[2]
You’ve heard me say that I don’t particularly care for Academy stories or stories where Kirk and Spock find each other prior to the Enterprise, right? It’s true that if I were to be asked to compose a writer’s guide for K/S, I would say they met when Kirk assumed command. Nothing in canon indicates they knew each other before that momentous event. However...you knew there’d be one, didn’t you? This is a great story! The elements which make K/S so special for me are all here. Spock is the intelligent innocent that I love to see and Kirk, even in his youth, is a man of considerable substance, courage and tenderness. I adore this Kirk! And Spock! Both Finnegan and Gary Mitchell are portrayed briefly but in accordance with my personal impression of them. Kirk and Spock are youthful, experiencing that incomparable once in a lifetime first love. Is there anything sweeter? Theirs is an amazingly gentle love and one that envelops the reader in a feeling of warmth and hope that lingers long after the final page has been turned.[3]
Like most K/Srs, I have my likes and dislikes when it comes to the subject matter of K/S stories. For instance, there are only a handful of A/U stories I would want to read more than once, even fewer "Mirror" stories, and maybe, at the most, one or two death stories. And there are two types of stories, Kirk and Spock in pre-reform Vulcan times or together as freshmen at Starfleet Academy, where it's almost impossible for me to get through them even once. But as is often said, there is an exception to every rule and this particular "Academy" story proves to be that exception. Of course, it doesn't hurt that this author just happened to pen the very first K/S story I ever read, a story so powerful it sucked me into this world like a vortex and I've been stuck here ever since. With no desire to get unstuck, I might add. I think the reason why I've always had a difficult time getting through an "Academy" story is because I've never bought the concept Kirk and Spock met before Kirk took command of the Enterprise. Not that it isn't feasible they could have been attending the Academy at the same time; if you do the math, it is, in fact, quite possible. Rather, my belief springs from viewing two episodes in aired Trek—"Where No Man Has Gone Before" and "Shore Leave." In the former, one clearly gets the impression the two men are still getting to know each other, both as colleagues and friends, and in the latter, when Finnegan makes his appearance, Spock shows no signs of recognition, despite the fact Finnegan was Kirk's main nemesis at the Academy. So whenever I've sat down to read one of these stories, I've just never been able to get over the concept they actually met during their Academy days enough so that I could enjoy the story. Until this one. Here the author weaves such an interesting and compelling tale that for the first time, I was able to set aside my disbelief and lose myself in the story. From that first meeting which leads to a developing friendship, which then leads to trust, and then love, and last, a promise to meet again, "Moonlight" has all the elements that make any K/S story one worth reading again. It proves the point that an incredibly talented author (a title this lady certainly deserves) can always overcome any obstacle and make you believe.[4]
This one's short and sweet. New-recruit!Spock finds himself with a human roommate at the Academy -- one JTK, to be precise. He expected a single room; Fleet policy is, all first-years have a room-mate to help them fit in. Cue heavy sighs. The first scene is horrifying to Spock, when Finnegan comes marching in pretending to be Kirk and starts rummaging thru Spock's drawers, closets, etc. Fortunately the real Jim shows up pretty soon and rescues Spock. They become good friends, though they have little free time and no common classes, Kirk being a third-year student to Spock's freshman. So Kirk is his hm, I think senpai is the word I want, Japanese for "older student friend/mentor." Such a lovely economical term. Kirk realizes early on they're attracted strongly, but on finding Spock's a complete virgin he decides hands off for now. Doesn't wanna mess up a good friendship, or push Spock if he's not ready yet. Mitchell is his boorish Academy self here, and Kirk is also seeing Janice Lester, which of course ends badly. He stumbles back to his quarters one night after a screaming nasty breakup, shitfaced, angry, and sorry for himself, and tries to guilt-cuddle Spock into some nookie -- the usual, I'm ashamed of my fellow guys -- aw, c'mon, it'll hurt if ya tease me, you wouldn't be a cocktease would you? Eeesh. Sorry lasses -- enuff blood to run one head, given two by the gods, what can we do? Act stupid a lot, until we get older and the T wears off a bit ;-)> But it is believable for a very young, very drunk, very upset Kirk to do so. And he stops in plenty of time, as soon as it gets thru to him that Spock is really not in the mood, just, not willing to shove him away and cause hurt. He goes and mopes in the shower and Spock mopes in the bed, then they talk and Kirk admits he was an asshole and totally apologizes. Spock nails him for all his bad behaviour and Kirk agrees, none of that was fair to you, or even true. He does the best he can to explain drunken/sexuallyfrustrated/ young humans and Spock says, well why did you not simply ask, if you desired me? Jim boggles, but finally gets it, and after talking some more they realize they really do feel the same -- but it's 6 am and classes start real soon now. It'll have to be tonight. That night Jim gets back first and makes everything ready for when Spock arrives -- and the rest, I'm gonna be mean and make ya read it. Hotsexytimes, booyah!! It's a real sweet story - - without ever getting sickening or saccharine. Just da right amount of fluff, for when ye want a bit of fluff.
So desu -- Ya got yer marchin' orders, readers -- now move out! ;-)> [5]
