The term "monster" is used to describe a broad category of unnatural creatures (or creature-adjacent beings), typically associated with fear and danger. In the context of media fandom, monsters are almost always wholly fictional entities; they may or may not possess sapience, and may or may not be overtly supernatural in nature. Monsters are usually used as antagonists or obstacles in fiction, though in many stories (especially modern and postmodern works), they are given a sympathetic portrayal.
