Background/Development/Summary
Welcome to MokeponHe wants to be the very best! That no one ever was... uh, no. Scratch that.
Adventures and friendship were never something that appealed to Atticus... Shame that it's a pokemon world he lives in, and so teenage boys living in Pallet Town are not expected to sit idly by. But the life of a hero is not one he's about to consider; too much hard work for little reward, and so instead he embarks on his quest not to become the greatest... But at least, the richest.
Although the biggest challenge may be ignoring the adventures and friendships which may attempt to ensnare him along the way...Comic introduction on Smackjeeves [2]
Fan Responses and Reviews
It wasn’t that Mokepon was bad when it started, but it’s just gotten so much better than “Competent grimdark Pokemon comic #12″. Watching Atticus evolve from a one-note “I live in Pokemon land but I hate Pokemon” character to a nearly-good person has been a better ride than anything the actual Pokemon franchise has done since Special[3]
What is it: A dickhead teenager is forced on a Pokemon adventure, and learns a valuable lesson about friendship while being dragged into a criminal conspiracy. A Pokemon fanfic that’s somewhat darker than the source material (though not really “grimdark”)The Good: Good action scenes, nice manga-style art. Notable improvement in art and storytelling over time. Atticus’ slow-burn character growth is satisfying.
The Bad: The early chapters are almost a completely different comic, and it takes a little while to find its groove.

- The Webcomic Overlook #190: Mokepon by El Santo, 2011
H0lyhandgrenade generally sticks to a very solid and very appropriate manga style for Mokepon. She does add a few flourishes of her own — the hand written word balloons, for example — that lend her own personal touch without straying too far from the Pokemon house style. She’s especially adept in setting up the sight gags. They remind of Rumiko Takahashi’s work on Ranma, where she would similarly set you up for one scene (say either a heroic attack or a sad, inflective scene) and then completely undermine your expectations on the very next panel. Which is to say that while Mokepon is, in one way, just following one of the now standard conventions of manga, H0lyhandgrenade executes it so well that it doesn’t matter. And, well, Mokepon is just so much fun. What impressed me is how much I did genuinely like the characters, and how, when I reached the last page, I was a little sad that I couldn’t follow their adventures any longer. It got to the point where it no longer mattered if this was Pokemon fanfiction in the first place. I thought that Brent, George, Dragonthing, and Kahn were highly enjoyable characters in their own right, characters owned and licensed by the Nintendo Corporation be damned.

I just read the whole comic so far. I love it.[4]

It's my favourite webcomic, even though I'm not as big into Pokémon as I used to be.

So far I've read through 24 pages, and I can honestly say while the art style is impressive, the writing itself is right on the verge of an emo teens DevArt account. Maybe I'm biased, but there's nothing wrong with enjoying Pokemon. Damn.[4]

The author herself has no problem with people enjoying Pokémon, just the protagonist does. :P
