Melissa Good is a well-known member of the Xena fandom and has often been named the most influential Xena fanfiction author.
In April 1997 she posted the first part of an epic Xena/Gabrielle altfic series[1] that departed at some point from canon and became quite popular. Xena and Gabrielle are depicted as soulmates and, when sharing an apple and a kiss, that magical connection even gifts them with a child.
Notable Works
Arguably her most important work is the uber novel Tropical Storm, which was released in September 1998. The main characters, Dar Roberts and Kerry Stuart, remain the best known modern-day incarnations of Xena and Gabrielle.[2] The story was an immediate success[3] and several sequels followed.[4] In early 1999, Tropical Storm became the first commercially released Uber-Xena novel, which started a trend that led to more and more Uber-Xena print publications.[2]
At some point there was talk about a Tropical Storm movie[5], but it doesn’t look like it’s meant to happen.
Influence
Missy is a true BNF, has a loyal fan following (called Merpups)[6] and her own mailing list that was developed to give fans of Melissa Good (Merwolf) a place to chat and praise the Goddess of Bards.[7] During its height the list produced a lot of traffic, between 6,000 and 7,000 messages per month. With almost 3,400 members and 1,000 messages each month it is still fairly active.
Phidippides' Missy Good/Ares: Warrior Puppy Fan Page is a fan site dedicated to one of her works.
In 2000 Renaissance Pictures commissioned Missy to write a Xena script for season six, and she later came back and wrote a second episode for the series.[8]
