I was reading fan fiction before I knew there was a name for it (and it was at the nifty archives. Ah memories.) but actually participating by writing (and posting publicly) fan fiction didn't happen until 2000, when I spent a summer falling into fandom via OZ. So... 7 years. ...I cut my teeth on OZ in 2000, and by the fall of that year, I was writing dueSouth. DS was my main fandom for a long time (until SGA, actually) but I've also participated in House, Harry Potter, Horatio Hornblower, and CSI. Most recently I've been dabbling in the Strachey Mysteries and that's been great fun.
...John and Rodney bring out the romantic in me. They say "I love you" with turkey sandwiches and gate collecting, by sneaking off and playing a game--their game, a secret game--for two years and they take turns saving one another's life. They stumble over declarations and either *completely* miss it when women (and some men) are throwing themselves at their feet or they look like they'd rather run away when they do realize it. But when it comes to one another they bring video files to the other's sister so she knows her brother and his courage and love, or they give his spaceships to fly. It's not marble halls and sunbursts, it's dorky and probably involves snarking at one another and insulting one another's country or hairstyle, but it's romance all the same.
