Reactions and Reviews
1997
Whoops, I've lost something in the beginning. At one page Spock is in his science department, avoiding the big, bad wolf a.k.a. Kirk, and on the next page he's in his quarters being accosted by said wolf. When did he get from one place to the next? [1]
I always enjoy stories where Spock gets a bit lost in the labyrinth of human vocabulary and custom. This story is based on a confusion over the term ' male bonding' which Spock , logically, confuses with you-know-what. I found the computer screen print used at the beginning of the story to be almost indecipherable but it was clear sailing after that. The action moved to the planet's surface and Spock shares a room with Kirk. The rest is history. The use of the electrical storm during the sex scene was great. [2]
Adorable beginning as Spock misinterprets a conversation between Kirk and McCoy. Kirk wants to go camping with McCoy to engage in some “male bonding” which Spock of course is blown away by and imagines Kirk and McCoy are going to actually bond, Vulcan-style.The three go camping and there’s a nice description of their hike up a mountain, albeit a little heavy on the descriptions of the distance measurements instead of the flora and fauna.
But the absolute best part of this story is the great kiss punctuated and enhanced by flashes of lightning. What a vivid scene.
Overall, a lovely quiet story using one of my favorite scenarios- that of Spock misunderstanding Terran language and customs. [3]

Once I had suspended my disbelief that a computer programmed for a Terran crew wouldn't have any information about male bonding, I enjoyed this story. In particular, I really liked the interplay between Kirk, Spock and McCoy during the first part of the camping trip. I loved the way the last few lines connected the ending to the earlier part of the story and tied everything up neatly. [4]

Looking for a nice peaceful interlude with no angst, no injuries, no misunderstandings between Kirk and Spock? This little story will fill the bill, even though Spock does fail to understand the term “male bonding” which causes him some anxious moments. It also serves to speed things up a little between them.
The mountain setting is lovely and spiced with thunderstorms and lightning, it is perfect for revealing inner feelings and learning how to express them. And these two men are very fast learners! It’s an enjoyable tale, start to finish. [5]
