Reactions and Reviews

1992

This is one of my favorite stories and I was rereading it the other day. It is one of those stories you can reread many tines and still derive pleasure from. It doesn't get old. [1]

1993

Seven years after first pon farr, Spock shares with McCoy his study of suitable female officers with whom to bond. That dinner scene between Spock and McCoy depicted an interesting friendship; it warmed me. McCoy suggests a male partner.

Spock starts his very logical male-list with McCoy. A charming, amusing scene--especially McCoy's quick recovery to Spock's offer.

Kirk is sad at the prospect of losing Spock's constant companionship, and goes to Spock to offer himself. This was a really nice, meaningful talk, about when Spock left to Gol, about their running away from unacknowledged feelings for each other. [2]

2000

Spock is back on board after V’Ger, and he is scientifically going through a list of candidates from Starfleet with whom he might bond. After all, pon farr is not far away and he does wish to remain in Starfleet, so he’s trying to logically find a bondmate. McCoy comes upon the list of women and shrewdly suggests that Spock isn’t being logical by excluding half the population just because they’re male. The first officer promptly starts a new list and puts McCoy’s name at the top!

Of course Kirk finds out and pumps McCoy for information. He wants to be name #1! It takes a little prodding by McCoy, but eventually the fearless captain walks into Spock’s cabin and declares himself. It’s neat that they don’t fall into bed right away but instead Spock gives Kirk legal documents to read and sign. Funny!

This is a silly little story not to be taken seriously. The old K/S mechanism of McCoy being the instigator is fully in front in Making a List, but it works ‘cause it’s all just a joke. Kirk keeps asking if he had been on the list throughout their end-of-story lovemaking, and Spock keeps putting him off, devilishly. But in the end he gets his answer.... [3]
