Main Mission Alpha was one of the newsletters published by Mary Bloemker's Main Mission Alpha. A newsletter, one that appears to succeed this one, is Command Center.
Issue 1
Issue 2
It was published in August 1976 and online as a pdf here.
- from the editor, Mary Hartley: "After much deliberation, I decided that, at last, number two of the newsletter was due. There are sufficient members at this point, and enough to talk about to fill a dozen pages..."
- there is much information about the fan club, see that page
- there is a bio of Nick Tate
- contains a long, long con report about 1976's August Party which mostly talks about ferrying actor Nick Tate around and contains no details about the con itself
- a fan tells of her interest in the show and conflicts with Star Trek fans: So, here I sit, a devotee of SPACE:1999. I'm proud of it, and glad that there are others like me. When I was a UFO fan, I got a lot of flak from STAR TREK fans who hated the series. I thought it might have teen because they hadn't watched the episodes that made that series interesting. They might have watched one or two episodes, and that was all. But after seeing the same attitude directed toward SPACE:1999, I decided I was wrong. The people who maintained that attitude were very narrow winded people, whose only interest was in STAR TREK, I'll bet some of these people never read any science fiction at all. Because most science fiction fans would view all these series with a less than critical eye, knowing it was television, and certain allowances must be made. Of course, STAR TREK was more accurate in a lot of ways, but now, over these years, the characters, the most important factor of all, have lost their appeal, at least to me, they have. In fanzines, you get the same stories, over and over again. Same plot, same situation, same everything. But the UFO and SPACE:1999 characters hold my interest, because they are new, and so much can be written into their character. This is a summation of why I enjoy SPACE:1999; I'd like to know why others like It. It would be interesting to see other opinions.
