Maes Hughes is a character of the manga and anime series Fullmetal Alchemist.
Canon
Maes Hughes is a close friend of Roy Mustang and fellow officer in the Amestrian Military. In the 2003 Anime, he meets the Elrics when the brothers first travel to Central City to take the State Alchemist exam,and remains a friend of theirs for years until his death. In the manga and Brotherhood, he meets the Elrics when Edward has already been a State Alchemist for several years.
Hughes and Mustang became friends at the military academy, and served in the Ishvalan War together. After the war, Hughes married Gracia and lived in Central City, where he worked for Military Intelligence. When the Elrics' quest for the Philosopher's Stone brings them to Central, Hughes and his officers help their investigation. This leads to Hughes uncovering the nationwide transmutation circle, and the homunculi assassinate him before he can warn Roy about it.
In Conqueror of Shamballa, the sequel movie to the 2003 anime, an alternate Maes Hughes lives in Munich, where he is a cop and member of the Nazi Party.
