Reactions and Reviews
This a/u novella was too a/u for me. I can accept a/u characters which differ from those in the mainstream as long as they come from a different past, culture, etc., that explains why they're different from the 'accepted' characters. But the point where this story became a/u was the detail that Kirk was kicked out of Starfleet Academy for cheating on the Kobyashi Maru [1] test, and that was not a strong enough justification, for me, to explain Kirk's different personality. I just could not see the bold, aggressive, energetic character I know turned into something of a Mama's Boy and settling into such a sedentary career as writing novels -- romance novels, at that — and becoming so sedentary that his flabbiness, though only age 22, is pointed out repeatedly by other characters in the story. When Kirk is finally re-admitted to Starfleet and assigned to the Enterprise, I could not believe that he would immediately risk he and Spock's careers -- which was so important to him -- by sneaking around to have sex. Spock was also a different character, but I found his depiction more believable since the story took place during the Captain Pike years, which justifies him behaving more emotionally than when he is older. I got a bit tired of Kirk's mother and felt that he and she were annoyingiy over-protective of each other. The character of Sergi was fun, however. I also liked the book publisher and his secretary and would have liked to have seen them play a larger role in the story. Questionable characterizations aside, the writing and development of this noveila was handled very well. I got a kick out of the 'biographical' articles concerning author Winona Kirk. Had this story not been so unbelievable to me, it could have been a lot of fun. [2]
