Look What We Made Taylor Swift Do is an op-ed article by Anna Marks in The New York Times about Taylor Swift, and her perceived sapphicness by the author. The article drew widespread criticism, especially for its spreading of the Gaylor conspiracy theory.

The Article

Reactions

Responses to the article have been widely critical, though defenses of it do exist, especially amongst other Gaylors, including professional articles. Much of the criticism focused on the idea that a professional article speculating on her sexuality could lead to outing if said speculation turned out to be true:

[@buttercupghost]
I think the thing that gets me is that if Taylor IS gay, this is even worse to do to her. People theorizing on her sexuality are trying to out her. How the hell do people think that would be okay?[1]
No celebrity owes you their coming out. Not a single one. Regardless of how wealthy or auspicious you think their life is, not a single one of those people owes you shit. I am so serious.[2]

[transmutationisms]
well i wrestled most valiently the demon that makes you post about gaylor nyt op ed and i lost. i cannot believe they quoted adrienne rich compulsory heterosexuality[3]

Some of the criticism involved the subject of media literacy:

[@angellovecharm7759]
This is what happens when you insist that your English teacher is full of shit and don't understand basic symbolism. Because it is basic, and they are misreading the sapling as a forest.[4]

Further criticism also related to the reference to Chely Wright's suicide attempt in the first paragraph, and its appropriateness in an article about Gaylor.

[flutter2deceive]
#literally do not care one way or the other about tswift but was directed to the article from chely wright's insta #and seriously what the fuck #i skimmed the rest of the article cuz again i don't really care #but the casual cruelty of bringing up someone's suicidal ideation from 12 years ago -in the first fucking sentence- #to service some hopes-and-dreams article about what if the biggest pop star right now was a girlkisser? #i went to the private screening of chely's documentary in 2010 (so i guess i can't do math- it was 14 years ago) #where she held a q&a afterwards #and she was vulnerable and brave in sharing her experience with the world #and the fact that this person just trotted it out there like she was narrating an episode of desperate housewives?#evil and unnecessary #and i guess shitty towards tswift too but i'm stuck on the first paragraph[5]

The article brought further attention to the Gaylor theory. Comparisons between Swift and Misha Collins having to come out as straight occurred within wider fandom spaces.
