Reactions and Reviews
I can wholeheartedly recommend all of Xasphie's TS fanfic, but this is the most recent story of hers that I've read, and this one stayed with me long after I finished the story. This wonderful read is an AU picking up at season four. Blair has gotten his doctorate, had his ride along credentials pulled due to the culmination of his degree, and has, unable to find teaching work in Cascade, relocated to Chicago. He has settled into a comfortable and happy life, feeling somewhat estranged from Cascade, Jim and Simon, who've not done a good job in keeping in touch with the former observer, each for reasons of their own that perfectly reflect the realities of distance on friendships. When Jim disappears,Simon breaks the silence and calls for Blair's assistance in finding the Sentinel. The action adventure component of the story, Jim's disappearance and subsequent rescue is edge of the seat, nail biting stuff deftly and compellingly handled. The ramifications of the "end" of the Sentinel and Guide partnership are explored and explained during the course of the search in such a true to life, and fascinating way, yet we see that the partnership for all the distance is still strong and vital.
This wonderful story doesn't end with Jim's rescue, but continues on to explore the emotional/mental/sense fall out of the event. Jim and Blair reaffirm their friendship at the same time as they realize that they have moved on. The denouement of the story is especially realistic and believeable, as Blair returns to his new, happy life in Chicago, and finds that nothing really stays the same, especially back in Cascade, and a way to continue the partnership is found.
Xasphie is a gifted writer with a flair for plots that mine both the "case story" and "angst/hurt comfort categories, making the results more than simply the sum of their parts. This is an exceptional read and I'm happy to recommend it on this forum! [1]
