Summary: The truth was he was lucky, and most days he knew it. Not the days Sandburg made wheat grass shakes in the blender and forgot to rinse it out, but most of the others.
Recs and Reviews
This is a short, cute little 'day in the life' story that starts with Jim like a cranky child(with legitmate reasons it turns out) and ends on a sweet, calm moment between Jim and Blair. It's very easy to imagine this is what their life is like between kidnappings and explosions.[1]
Richard Burgi, on reflecting his role as the character Jim Ellison, said that he played a guy who had a blessing and a curse. This short story explores that double-edged sword through Jim’s eyes. It starts off with Jim having a zone in Simon’s office. He’s sulky and frustrated and you can appreciate his feelings with this passage:He tried to pretend this stuff didn't bother him -- the zones, the freakouts -- but it did. He hated how lost it made him feel. It was his *job* to protect the people of this city. Unless the people had recently gotten their nails done or were wearing a shirt with reflective paint, and then he was usually too busy getting pulled out of oncoming traffic to deal with their problems.
Poor Jim. Luckily he *does* have an anthropologist to help him figure things out and provide a very satisfactory solution. Enjoy.[2]
