Reactions and Reviews

1997

This story follows immediately after the events of The Extremists; it has been written to stand on its own, and for the benefit of anyone who has not read The Extremists, there is a brief explanation of a few points that would be understood by anyone who has read the earlier novel.

On the way to Starbase 12 for debriefing after the events of the earlier story, Kirk is informed that Nogura has died; the ship is ordered to return directly to Earth.

Frankly, I think this should have been part of the novel. Too much of it concerns a follow-up to the events of the original story for it to stand completely on its own.

Having said that, it's a masterly piece of work that resolves the problems that had been left unanswered (though I did spot the villain of the piece) and a tight bit of writing, but it must have been part of the original plot.

I wouldn't have tried to review this if I had not set out to do a whole-zine review. To say anything is to reveal too much of the story. [1]
