Kouyou Ozaki is a character in the Bungou Stray Dogs fandom.
In Canon
Pre-Main Manga/Anime
Following the death of her boyfriend when they try to escape working for the Port Mafia together, Kouyou becomes very cynical towards hope and love. She takes on a more positive view of the organization and becomes loyal to it after Mori Ougai becomes the Boss. Nakahara Chuuya is formally or informally under her jurisdiction when he is a new member of the Mafia, and he calls her Ane-san, "big sister." Like Izumi Kyouka, her Ability takes the form of a magical demon, and she later mentors Kyouka.
Main Manga/Anime
When Kyouka leaves the mafia, Kouyou tries to get her to return, believing both of them condemned to a life in the darkness because of their natures. Kouyou fails, but Kyouka's wellbeing remains a motivating factor for Kouyou throughout the plot.
In Fandom
Much fandom discussion of Kouyou revolves around her relationships with Chuuya and Kyouka, similarities to Verlaine, and evolving relationship with her place in the Port Mafia. Most fics which feature Kouyou are not Kouyou-centric but feature her as an older sister figure or actual older sister to Chuuya. In AUs, she is often his older sister by blood or adoption, and Paul Verlaine is sometimes their sibling or parent.
Although Kouyou has no canon ties to the Red Light District, she is frequently headcanoned as being an Oiran or running a brothel. This is due to her appearance, manner of speaking, and having mentored Kyouka, who once suggests getting out of a situation by using her "feminine wiles."[1] This has inspired courtesan AUs with her[2] and sometimes also Chuuya.[3] Another, less common theory is that she is the old Boss' daughter.[4]
Some fans have criticized her treatment in fandom, and that of other female characters by the fandom, as reductive and leaning into "wine aunt" or "cool older sister" archetypes without exploring her individuality or the dark choices she makes.[5]
She is most frequently shipped with Yosano Akiko. They often appear as a side ship in Soukoku fics.
