The gen relationship between Klaus Mikaelson and Marcel Gerard plays an important part in The Originals canon and is a common presence in Klaus and Marcel fanworks.
Canon
Their canon relationship started off as paternal/familial when Klaus rescued young Marcel from being whipped (as showed in flashbacks). He took the boy in, gave him a name and raised him like a son. The relationship between the two evolve into a more antagonistic one during the first season of the show, but by season 2 it's on its way to being repaired.
Fandom
Fandom embraced all facets of their gen relationship. From father/son, to brothers, to close friends, to mentor/student, to antagonists, to enemies.
Marcel started to show up in Klaus-centric fanfics immediately after the character was announced, usually as a friend in a brief appearience.
