Canon
Klaus and Elijah are half-brothers (they share a mother) who have a very tumultous relationship in canon. They go from being incredibly close to being enemies to working together towards a common goal while sniping at each other.
Rebekah: Where are you going?
Elijah: To find out who's making the move against our brother. And then... I'll either stop them, or I'll help them. Depending on my mood.[1]
Unlike Rebekah, Elijah never gives up on Klaus and his attempts at redeeming his little brother are a major motivation on both TVD and The Originals.
Fandom
The fans adore the intense and close relationship Elijah and Klaus have in canon, and the way it is portrayed in fanworks, often resembles what it is on The Originals (and not the early episodes of The Vampire Diaries). While not many fans ship the characters romantically, a lot of them (the majority of The Originals fans, really), love and cherish their familial relationship at portrayed in canon.
