Kirby is the titular protagonist of Kirby (franchise). He is a pink puffball of an unknown species who came into Planet Pop Star and since then, has become his home while defending his planet from various invaders.

Fandom

Many people of the fanbase see Kirby as the most powerful character in the franchise and even extends to the point they believe that Kirby can easily defeat any character outside of his series. Many attribute it due to his many feats, although exaggerated as Kirby is often aided by weapons he needed to use and allies in canon to defeat his enemies.

While Kirby is referred to as a boy in localizations, in the original Japanese, he is a gender-neutral character. This doesn't necessarily mean he doesn't have any masculine pronouns, as he uses the masculine kare (かれ) as well as when he was given the chance to use actual dialogue, he tends to use masculine conventions. However, it doesn't omit the fact he's still gender-neutral[1]. As a result, many fans see him as nonbinary and exclusively gave him they/them and/or they/he pronouns. In fact, the AO3 tag They/Them Pronouns for Kirby (Kirby) has over 37 works.

Relationships

In shipping, Kirby's most popular ships are with Prince Fluff and Ribbon, both ships being popular in fanart and fanfic respectively.

However, Kirby is more popular in platonic relationships. One of the popular found family dynamics that has occurred in recent years are Kirby, King Dedede, Bandana Waddle Dee, and Meta Knight, thanks to recent games and official art pairing the four up and developing a close friendship that they arguably became Kirby's best friends. Fans love to play up that Dedede and Meta Knight are husbands who adopt/see Kirby and Bandana Dee as their sons. Similarly, Meta Knight and Kirby is a popular father-son dynamic separately, that the Japanese fandom has a term for the headcanon, パパナイト, translating to "Papa Knight".
