Kino Makoto/Mizuno Ami is a popular pairing for Kino Makoto (Sailor Jupiter) and Mizuno Ami (Sailor Mercury) in the Sailor Moon fandom.

Canon

Before becoming friends with Usagi and the other Sailor Senshi, Ami was a shy girl who did not make friends easily, and preferred to spend time alone studying and reading books instead of being with her classmates. In return, many of her classmates believed her to be snobby and arrogant because of her intelligence, even being superhuman, as she always finished at the top of national exams. However, once Ami and Usagi became friends, the opinions began to change.

Makoto is an independent teenager who lives in Azabu-Juuban as her parents died in an airline accident when she was younger. After she got a sense that there was a place she had to be, she transferred to Juuban Municipal Junior High School, the same school Usagi and Ami go to. Makoto has been shown to like cooking and bargain hunting.

The two are Sailor Mercury and Sailor Jupiter respectively, and are both from the five original Inner Sailor Senshi of the Solar System.[1][2]

Fandom

Like most of the Inner Sailor Senshi the two are close friends, however the pairing gained more popularity after episode 147 of the original anime, in which Makoto notes that being so tall meant not many people wanted to dance with her, prompting Ami to ask if she'd dance with her. The scene is often used in screenshot redraws and sometimes parodied in other fandoms that have tall characters.[3]

In the 90s and early 2000s, the satirical Jupiter Proof Page reportedly confused many new fans into thinking the ship was canon, leading to backlash from at least one fan who was turned off of the ship.
