Reactions and Reviews
It’s after the episode “Journey to Babel” ends, and Amanda comforts Kirk in sickbay after he has terrible nightmares, and finally gets him to open up about the source of the nightmares (killing Gary is causing nightmares and also brought back nightmares that Kirk hadn’t had since Tarsus.) I couldn’t help but agree with Amanda when she asks McCoy and Spock “Why have you allowed this to continue?” McCoy’s reason was that unless it affects Kirk’s command he must respect Kirk’s wishes to handle things himself, but these are not normal nightmares. Nightmares that bring Kirk awake night after night, screaming and sobbing; nightmares so severe that they find Kirk out of bed huddled in a corner, shaking, with his fist in his mouth; nightmares so terrible that he needs McCoy or Spock stay with him to keep him company; nightmares so bad that he lets Spock hold him, and McCoy did nothing? However, if you can accept this premise, and like reading about a really needy Kirk, then this is a touching and affecting portrayal of how Kirk allows himself to be comforted by Amanda, how Amanda learns a few things about Spock in the process, and how Kirk and Spock finally realize their true feelings for each other.
