Reactions and Reviews

There are some stories that require the reader to completely suspend their disbelief. This story is one of them and it well worth the effort. Kirk and Spock are summoned to, of all things, jury duty. Spock is slightly more obtuse than usual but that results in some very funny scenes between our Vulcan and another juror. The dialogue is snappy and funny. The tone is light and affectionate. I smiled as I read it, and so will you. [1]

This was an amusing little story about the havoc that ensues when Kirk and Spock are on jury duty together. Spock's curiosity and literal mindedness ends up getting him in trouble with the jury supervisor, the other jurors, Kirk and even the judge! Kirk is also trying to bring up taking their friendship one step further, and Spock is being comically obtuse at times. I love the end of this story, when the prosecutor at the trial asks if the defendant can grip hands with all the jurors. Well, Spock being a touch telepath can read the man's thoughts when it comes his turn, and this ends up in a mistrial being granted! The characterizations of Kirk and Spock are somewhat exaggerated to make things more humorous, and you need to willingly suspend disbelief that both Kirk and Spock would be called for jury duty in the same place at the same time, and that Star Fleet would let them serve, but I enjoyed this story nonetheless. [2]

Kirk and Spock get picked for jury duty, and the criminal justice system will never be the same. Kirk's a bit impatient with his first officer, but it's totally understandable given the fact that Spock is his most literal, logical, exasperating self. At one point, the captain says, "Ithought you were more sophisticated than this." Me, too. But it does make for some delightfully humorous situations. I found myself giggling throughout the whole story. My favorite exchange between them takes place over dessert near the end. Because this zine is still relatively new, I won't say anymore, but, personally, had I been the captain, I would have decked him. But I would have been laughing while I was doing it. Light and funny and guaranteed to make you smile. Great job, Corey. [3]
