Jane Austen Fandom Glossary

The Jane Austen fandom developed in many ways parallel to media fandom, and so has its own fannish terminology. This list does not intend to be exhaustive, but to be a quick reference of those terms that are exclusive to the fandom.

General Terms

  • Bunchage: refers to the man's equipment when inside his breeches.
  • DtBT: Doing the Bingley thing. Screwing up a post to a message board, referring to Bingley's careless writing habits.
  • FMS: Forced Marriage Scenario. Refers to an usual trope used to throw two characters together (usually Elizabeth and Darcy). (See parallels to AMTDI and Soulbond.)
  • FCA: Freak Carriage Accident. Refers to an usual trope in which characters are conveniently killed by, for example, freak carriage accidents.
  • FTN!: FIX THIS NOW! Used in comments when an author posting a WIP leaves the story in a cliffhanger.
  • FWC: Fuck With Canon. Fanfic genre. It be applied to a Pride and Prejudice fanfiction that does not end with a happy Fitzwilliam Darcy/Elizabeth Bennet ending, or to a story that has veered far away from canon by any measure. (OOCness, setting significantly changed, etc.)
  • HMS: Hot Monkey Sex/Hot Married Sex. Refers to sexually explicit story content.
  • JAFF: Jane Austen Fan Fiction. Refers to both published sequels & fanfiction.
  • Mod: modern era stories. AUs set in the current era.
  • NB: Naughty Bit or Nasty Bit. Short erotic stories. (See PWP.)
  • ODB: Our Dear Boy (specifically referencing Colin Firth).
  • PIP: posting in progress; the story is written but the author is still posting in sections until completely posted.
  • Reg: regency era stories. That is, stories that are set in the same time frame as the novels.
