Con Report: 1977

It was a hot, sticky Arizona day when I first met Walter Koenig. The event was the second annual Ivan Cook's Star Trek and Science Fiction convention held in Phoenix on May 28-30, 1977. Two of my friends and I had signed up for Walter's table at the continental breakfast. Other guest-hosts at the breakfast included George Takei/Grace Lee Whitney and Robert Heinlein. There were about eight people at each table which gave everyone present a chance to talk with their host.

Walter showed up for the occasion in a black velvet suit that really looked great on him but was not very appropriate for the 105 degree heat outside (which was where the breakfast was being held). One of his first questions was: "Does it always get this hot here in May?" As the breakfast progressed we noticed what a really nice person Walter Koenig is. He also appeared to be rather quite and shy, but he seemed to enjoy talking.to the fans and spent a lot of time with them.

Walter was quite modest, especially when it came to talking about himself or his many accomplishments. This was apparent when near the end of the breakfast he hope, fully exclaimed, "I hope you all got your four dollars worth!" (that's what we had paid for this extra little privilege). My friends and I were certain we had!![1]
