The Interview is a Kirk/Spock vignette by Karla Kelly.

It was published in the print zine First Time #50.

Summary

"Spockʼs answers to an interview are different from his thoughts. "Skin to skin, buttocks pressed against my genitals, my hand caressing his chest in the aftermath of our loving.""

Reactions and Reviews

Ask and ye shall receive! I have been asking for more Karla Kelly stories and yea! They’re here! Okay, so this one is really, really short, at about half a page, but it’s a story!

This delightful mini-vignette is a portion of an interview (Hey! not even the whole interview! I’d better stop complaining...) between Spock and an anonymous interviewer.

It was like potato chips...I could never eat just one. So ingrate that I am, I want more. [1]

Another gem by Karla, just a one-page, darling thing. Spock is being interviewed...and in italics in his thoughts are his real answers. Quintessential Spock, both his very literal out-loud responses, and how he feels beneath those. A wonderful piece. [2]

This story proves that good things really can come in small packages. “The Interview” is a very short excerpt from an interview about the Enterprise’s five- year mission. Spock is the interviewee, and we get to read not only his spoken replies, but also what he’s thinking as each question is asked. This is fortunate for us, as it makes the interview a lot more interesting and gives us a chance to see Spock’s dry sense of humor at work. “The Interview” works nicely on another level: it just has to remind virtually every K/Ser of the way we all love to read between the lines when we watch the original episodes. [3]

This is delightful! I absolutely love every word of it. And there are very few words, darn it.

If you ever wanted to introduce someone to the idea of K/S, this one-pager would be the ideal solution. If you aren’t hooked by this one, forget it and move on to another genre. Spock is being interviewed by the media at the end of the 5 year mission. But it isn’t his verbal response to the questions, which is predictably Vulcan-dry, it is his mental answer that is so very grand. Oh, my. What wonderful revelations he makes (but only to himself in the silence of his thoughts).

Question One: What is the most memorable event from the 5 year mission? Here you can picture the stoic Vulcan, in full dress uniform, placed in the uncomfortable position of facing a reporter, wanting only to finish as quickly as possible and get back to his friend and lover. The Answer on his lips is one thing. The one that forms in his mind is “The first time he made love to me”. And we are given a great little snippet of the event. These are the sweetest, most loving thoughts this side of Heaven. I read it 3 times in a row and drooled all over the page! And wait until you read the unspoken response to the inquiry about his willingness to take orders from his illogical human Captain! I’m not telling. You gotta read it!

Wow! So very much said in so little space. You don’t realize that Kirk isn’t even there. This has to make you wonder what Spock is thinking each time you hear him speak from now on.[4]
