Reactions and Reviews
1997
I enjoy a good A/U story (maybe not a steady diet, but as a nice change) and I especially enjoy stories featuring a young Kirk and Spock. The reason I often mention the beginnings of stories is that that is what captures my attention immediately and defines the rest of my reading experience. Here, the beginning is terrific as Kirk and Spock are driving cars, which is an attention-getter to begin with.Totally cute when Spock breaks for a squirrel and Kirk's expensive sports car (very inventive) needs repair. Spock offers to tow Kirk's car to his house and I loved: "render aid to the squirrel"! The author did a very good job of creating a future time without hitting the reader over the head with futuristic things. Spock is staying in a beach hut in Southern California—also totally cute. And I loved that he helps care for all the sick and wounded animals—so Spock.
Kirk's initial reaction to the beach hut is right on target for his character. However, even though I'm not so sure this is Kirk, even at sixteen years old, I thought the author set up and defined this character very well with all the conflicting emotions of a teenager, the parents, his feelings of being unloved, etc—without "telling".
Except for the constant POV changes, very nice first evening together as they get to know each other. And I appreciated the convenient excuse of Kirk's car being in the repair shop so he "has" to spend a few days with Spock.
A few minor glitches: I don't think either would refer to the other as "young man" or young anything. They are contemporaries. Uh, oh—two "snorted derisively" and Kirk has brown eyes? But for the most part, these are very believable teenagers and I loved their beginning attraction to each other as they were both secretly horrified and embarrassed. Just a bit too much explaining exactly what was going on emotionally. Sometimes it better to just present the scene and the dialogue and situation will explain it all.
I adored that Spock played the guitar! So perfect!
And in a lovely scene, they sit out on a cliff at night to watch the sunrise and they kiss sweetly. Like Spock breaks for squirrels, I break for sweet K/S kisses.
Kirk leaves and goes back home and there's a scene with his father that has too much unnecessary family history in it. Not that Kirk's background isn't of interest, but it doesn't lead anywhere in this story. When the father dies in an accident (a quite inventive way—in a luxury cruise liner accident) Kirk goes to the Vulcan embassy to see Spock. I loved knowing of the eventually surprise that Spock's father is the ambassador when Kirk all along thought that Spock "just works there".
Absolutely neat ending, of which I am particularly pleased, because it was so right and realistic. They are both going to Starfleet Academy and know that someday they will be together.
Wonderful! And I liked how the story was based on the Jim Croce song—very nice.
I thoroughly enjoyed this lovely story. [1]
Stories that bring Kirk and Spock together when they're teenagers are not my favorite. However the quality of the writing kept me reading along and thoroughly enjoying the story right up to the end, which was both satisfying and a personal relief. When Kirk left to return home, I had to skim back through the previous pages to be sure only a few days had passed. The author sets a pace for those few days that is so full and rich, for me, as for Kirk, it seemed that Kirk and Spock had been together for a much longer time. [2]

On a road of Southern California, the lives of two lonely teenagers collide: the brash, spoiled son of a business magnate Jim Kirk and quiet, gentle alien Spock who lives in a ramshackle house on the Coast. In the course of a few weeks out of time, they learn to know each other, discover love and Jim will find a sense to his reckless life. A very nicely written coming-of-age, with a beautiful feeling of innocence and pure love permeating the story. This young Jim feels surprisingly like reboot!Jim. [3]
