Reactions and Reviews

“I Will Follow” made me think of that quote from the Bible that says something like: “whither thou goest I will go”, since that is the theme of the story. The plot concerns the end of the five year mission, as Spock contemplates what his future holds for him and Kirk. His discovery that Kirk intends to take a promotion causes him to first try and talk Kirk out of it, then declare he will follow Kirk wherever he goes. This is a nice section, as Spock explains that the Enterprise is not his home anymore, that Kirk has become his home. Which of course eventually leads to the declaration of their mutual love for each other, aided by a mind meld that has a rather unexpected result. The story is told from Spock’s first person POV, which I think must be difficult to do well, since we don’t see this used all that often in K/S. However, I thought the author captures the proper tone and succeeds admirably, both in the narrative parts of the story and in the dialogue. I enjoyed reading everything from Spock’s perspective, especially his feelings for Kirk. I loved the last two lines: “Wherever James Kirk goes, I go. The knowledge that the opposite is true still amazes and shocks...and pleases me.“ I thought this was a quiet, lovely, heart warming story and I enjoyed it a lot.[1]

This is a beautifully written story, in which the five- year mission is drawing to a close, and Kirk and Spock must deal with the question of what their futures will be like. There isn’t much plot here, but that’s okay, because the central issue is and should be how Spock and Kirk will handle the changes that are in store for them. The story is told from Spock’s point of view, and he is very much in character, as is Kirk. “I Will Follow” is a joy to read.[2]
