Reactions and Reviews
1991
The only complaint I have about this story is that I was antsy during the early part of it because I was filled with so many questions. Some things were clarified as time went on. however, and things that weren't fell into the realm of matters perhaps best left unexplained. (It's also possible that there were adequate clues to explain everything if one went back to the beginning and read carefully enough.) This story is probably one of the more literal translations of the phrase "showing a story instead of telling it". Narrative was kept to a minimum, and I was drawn into the mysterious dialogue and events taking place. The scene where Spock was attacked by the alien form was particularly vivid, making it dramatic with a minimum of words. But what I liked best about this story -- beyond the above, and its sheer originality and freshness -- was the scene on the observation deck. Again the reader was shown Kirk and Spock's intense love for each other through vivid little details — such as Kirk's hand "pressed against the plastiglass" -- that characterized their shy, quiet conversation. Though the sex act itself was minimal, the scene as a whole was the most passionate that I've read in some time. The frivolousness of the final line was the only let down, and I am looking forward to reading more fron these new authors. [1]
