The Hong Sisters are a writing team duo consisting of sisters, Hong Jung Eun and Hong Mi Ran who write Korean dramas. Their first drama, Delightful Girl Chunyang, aired 2005 was a surprise hit that launched the sisters into the spotlight. The drama was a twist on a very popular Korean folktale Chunyang and included the meta humor and pop culture references that is now their signature style. The next year was even more successful with the massive hit, My Girl, which not only was a huge Hallyu hit and popular overseas but also made all the four leads starring in the drama into overnight stars.
Some people in the English-language K-drama fandom have lost faith in the Hong Sisters' ability to craft solid dramas. Dangermousie, a BNF in the K-drama fandom on LJ, said:
- "They seem to be trying to mass-produce scripts. The interval between each of their dramas gets shorter and shorter. Before one drama is finished, they're already talking about the next one they'll release.
- They're probably trying to take advantage of their growing popularity (after You're Beautiful, I guess). But they're sacrificing their dramas' quality for the sake of good timing." [1]
However, in 2019, the sisters created another hit and one of the most viewed cable dramas of all time with 2019s Hotel del Luna.
