Reactions and Reviews

Home by Karen Porter is a seven page story. This is a really nice story, and I liked it a lot BUT things just happened too quickly. This is complaint I have about a lot of K/S stories though. I frankly do not think that Kirk and Spock are going to have sex and immediately either before, during or after are going to know that they love each other for life and want to be bonded. That's a particular hang-up I have. And, obviously, it is a minority viewpoint because that happens more often in stories than not. BUT if I can get past that problem of mine, then I don't have any problems with the story except it would be nice to have it more developed. This story is set immediately after "Minor, Mirror." It tums out that the mirror Kirk had seduced the regular Spock. (I guess that makes the minor Spock irregular??) And when the regular Kirk returns, then it's only a matter of time before the two of them get together. [1]

This story had some really enjoyable moments. I'm an avid Mirror-story fan and in particular, such as here, our Kirk and Spock after the events in the mirror universe.

Really cute exchanges between them in the transporter room after Kirk's arrival back; they give each other their last chess moves to ensure they're really them. Another good part, on a serious note, was Kirk'smentioning that the other Spock forced a meld on McCoy; this is of course utterly shocking to our Spock.

Then, we learn that Spock now has "feelings" he wants to share with Kirk, since his encounter with Mirror-Kirk. Oh boy — I was dying to know what transpired between them. Here's a really clever and expressive touch: Kirk and Spock go to Kirk's cabin, and we see that Spock and Mirror Kirk had been in there and didn't totally clean up.

Also here we get Kirk's feelings, his wondering if Spock had read his personal logs when he was away, because he'd been saying some revealing things in there before he left, about his feelings for Spock.

However, here is where I had a problem, and throughout the rest of the story. Giving us the characters thoughts in italics bothers me. There is no subtlety, no seeing feelings expressed by actions and dialogue; instead, we're told exactly what the character feels, and not in a way it would actually be in reality. A person doesn't "think" feelings in a logically, concise paragraph summing up all his feelings about the other person. Ifs difficult to express why I don't care for this, other than that it feels artificial. One perhaps thinks this is the most authentic way to express a character—like straight from the horse's mouth—but it isn't.

Anyway, I won't spell it all out, but I loved learning what happened between Spock and Mirror Kirk. And Kirk reads what Mirror Kirk put in his personal log about intimacy with Spock. This is a great scenario.

I didn't totally buy Kirk and Spock's actions and words in the last scene when they came together finally, but it was still great sex, for sure. [2]
