Recs and Reviews
Today is Groundhog's Day, so how could I possibly resist rec'cing a fantastic Groundhog's Day story like this one? It's a trope that, when used adeptly, can reveal a great deal about the characters and their motivations by simply changing a few details. And ember_firedrake has managed to write a piece that flows beautifully; it strikes the right balance of repeated details and changes, and even if Danny feels stuck in his repeating Friday, the reader will recognize his progress. It's a first season story with all the key players. We get to see Danny as a father, a partner, a cop, a friend, a matchmaker, and in every role he remains someone who's looking for something to ground him, something to call home. You'll love the way he convinces people to believe that he's trapped in a time-loop, and what he learns by having to repeat certain tasks over and over. It's a fantastic character piece and a really good example of this trope done right! Happy Groundhog's Day![1]
This was one of the first fics I read in the fandom. I really love Groundhog Day AU's, and this is a fine example of that. I love how Danny changes each day, taking advantage of what he learned the loop before to try and make things better the next trip around. For himself and for his friends. The solution for ending the time loop makes me laugh, because of course. Ember's writing style is easy to read and the story moves along briskly. This fic reminds me why I'm so fond of all these characters.[2]
Love, love, love this! Especially, his telling Kono and then taking her advice. And learning to surf. But discovering it all came back to Steve was just so right. I do think it was him telling Kono he considered Hawaii home was the trigger. Steve is smart like that. You must have written for days to come up with such a tightly woven story. Absolutely a keeper in my Hawaii 50 folder![3]
This is great! I really love Danny's voice throughout this. Every groundhog day fic needs those days of panic, and he got them, but he's also so methodical and manic every day, which is perfect. I also love Kono's kickass behaviour, how she may be the female-confidant, but she mostly just kicks Danny's ass into gear. I'm glad we got a lot of Grace, and I really like the way that you made reconnecting with Rachel an important part of Danny's process. Plus, I love that Steve, as obviously important as he is throughout the whole story, is also very much in the background. A very constant, ever-present background, but that the main focus of the story isn't their interactions.[4]
Groundhog Day! *squee!* I love this concept--that Life IS a dress rehearsal, and you get do-overs until you get it right. You do it beautifully. Poor Danny! But in the end, I think Steve may be partly right, but I think that Danny is, too. It's not enough for Danny to fix the world for other people, he has to make it right for himself, too.[5]
I can't count how many times I laughed (like when Danny finally lost it and burned his couch), but there also was a few moments that broke my heart (like when Danny feared he'd never see Grace growing up). And the rebellious!Danny deciding to just spend a whole day with Grace or fly to Jersey made me all awwwww! ^_^I love the Danny/Kono friendship here, although I rarely pay attention to such things. Kono was wonderful, and I can't imagine a better person to be Danny's confidant in situation like this. Also, I think it was cute that she warned Steve about what was going on. She's such a great friend to both Steve and Danny! ^_^ If I haven't liked her from the first moment we met her in the show, I'd've definitely stared to like her after reading your story!
Then there's of course Steve and his touching ways to be close to Danny and Grace ♥ I really wish we get more of that in the show. And then Steve following Danny to Jersey, and his kinky idea how to use Danny's tie at the end - that was sooo, sooo hot!!! ^_^
All in all, your story is one of my favourite McDanno fics I've read so far (ᵔᴥᵔ) In fact, I told my friends about how much I enjoyed it, and now they'd like me to translate your fic into Polish (which is our native language), 'cause not all of them can read English very well. If you don't mind me doing the translation, I'd be honored to make their wish come true, and I promise to take good care of this puppy! Please, let me know what you think. And thank you so much for this amazing story! \m/[6]
I just love the extra island flavor ember_firedrake added to this marvelous trope-y goodness. It also pleases me that even though Danny goes through dozens of repetitions of the day he never says “fuck it” and doesn’t call in the bank robbery, he always makes sure it’s taken care of. I just love that.[7]
