Reactions and Reviews

1990

This is another story in which Spock rapes Kirk, and the author does injustice to rape survivor psychology to make a happily ever after ending. When McCoy is insensitive to rape, as he is in this story, it's not only an unappealing character trait, but a sign of unprofessional behavior. McCoy's training and experience should have taught him better than to say that all a raped Kirk needed was a fine bolt of female." Later he pressed Kirk to admit that he enjoyed a gentle sexual encounter with Spock. Surely McCoy would know that Kirk's feelings about Spock would be extremely ambivaient, and that pushing him into a sexual relationship with Spock at this point wouldn't help Kirk to sort out his feelings. It also certainly wouldn't assist Kirk in recovering from rape. This story suffers from a total lack of insight about rape. [1]

I adored this story! Okay, now that that’s out of the way, here’s what it’s about and I’ll try not to tell too much, although I can’t help it sometimes when a story is this good and I want to tell every wonderful scene!

Kirk and Spock are on Cestus at a reception for the emperor. They look at a painting of a Cestusian hero portrayed with his human love-slave (blond, fair skinned, got it?) and Spock tells a fascinated Kirk the story behind the painting.

They decide to go back to their hotel room and I loved this interchange:

“It would appear that since only the two of us will be sleeping tonight it was unnecessary to assign us to the same room,” Spock commented.

“Ah, but my innocent first officer, rooms are made for more than merely sleeping.”

Spock looked at him quizzically.

“Never mind,” Kirk chuckled. “I’ll tell you when you grow up.”

So later when they are sharing a bed, platonically, Spock is delirious with a raging fever. Kirk takes care of him and after goes back to sleep, but then is awakened again by Spock who imagines himself the Cestusian hero from the painting and Kirk is the love-slave. So Spock does to Kirk what masters usually do to their love-slaves.

The next morning Kirk avoids all questions or talk and they return to the Enterprise.

In a very nice scene, McCoy confronts Kirk and gets the truth out of him. Kirk says he can’t forgive Spock, but does confess that it wasn’t so one-sided.

Although I question whether nothing would be said about Spock’s state of mind, McCoy finds out that it was a substance in the drink that was an hallucinogen and lowered Spock’s inhibitions.

When McCoy tells Spock that the drug makes you go for what you always wanted, he says:

“He is very desirable,” McCoy soothed. “A million people on a thousand planets would like to touch such desirability. Why should you be any different?”

I really enjoy the serious miscommunication scenario in K/S—Spock thinks Kirk hates and despises him. He thinks he’s lost everything, so he wants to leave the Enterprise and take a post on Memory Alpha, where he’ll be alone for a year.

Before Spock leaves, he beams down planetside during a shore leave to rescue a very drunk Kirk. A terrific scene ensues as Spock coolly pays off an angry prostitute.

Spock goes to Kirk’s hotel room and Kirk wakes up from his drunken stupor complaining that he couldn’t get it up with the prostitute. Spock wants to help him be able to be with the woman, so he touches Kirk’s temples in a mind- meld and puts his other hand over his genitals.

This scene was so great—Kirk tells Spock that it’s not the woman he wants. He comes on to Spock and their lovemaking consists of undulation with clothes on.

In the morning, Spock goes back to the ship all happy because now he thinks Kirk wants him and he’s going to turn down the Memory Alpha posting.

A heart-rending scene as Kirk flies into the cabin in a rage and accuses Spock of raping his mind to make Kirk want him and tells Spock to get off the ship! So sad!

Lots more wonderful scenes as Kirk is miserable and goes on drunken binges until finally confronts Spock as he’s about to leave.

“Spock, don’t leave. I love you.”

But Spock says he must and: “Kirk turned and walked from the cabin and let Spock walk out of his life.” Wow!

About eight months later, after McCoy insists that Kirk has “got to let him go”, Kirk meets with Spock. I adored this wonderful dialogue:

“You didn’t answer my comtapes,” Kirk said. “I have been busy.” “That’s a lousy excuse.” “I have none other to offer.”

“I’ve missed you.” “The Memory Alpha project is progressing well.” “I want you back on the Enterprise with me.” “The crew evaluation should help generate the funds needed to expand the project.” “I’m incomplete without you.” Heart be still! I thought that so perfectly captured such a tense and exciting moment between them. And a great last line that okay, okay, I won’t reveal and you’ll just have to read! What a beautiful, beautiful story! If Elizabeth Scott doesn’t start writing again, a great talent will be wasted. [2]
