Reactions and Reviews
1990
This story, told by Spock, takes place two weeks after the aborted pon farr, only it was not truly aborted. Spock is still suffering its affects, though it is not now a life and death matter, he says. Kirk tracks Spock down in the computer room of the Enterprise and starts a conversation about Spock's avoidance of him. When he finds out the Vuican is still in pon farr. he questions him as to why he does not seek physical relief, even if only through masturbation. Spock replies that he is too stubborn. Kirk suggests Spock needs a teacher, and takes him to a secluded storage room, where the planned lessons suddenly turn into a real seduction. I have two criticisms of this story. The first is that it somehow does not sound iike Spock. The second is that the sex is not explicit enough. The accompanying illustration by Barbara Walker is simply stunning -- one of the best portrayals of Spock I've seen in a long time. [1]
1998
This story transported me back to my own first flushes of love for K/S, with such innocence does it depict Kirk and Spock's first acknowledgment of the sexual potential of their love. It was wonderful having it in first person Spock, because it's about Kirk encouraging Spock to and teaching him about masturbating. Spock still has unmet physical needs after the pon farr; and the talk they have that night feels so authentic and genuine--really good characterization. Kirk has to like pull teeth at first to get the truth out of Spock, but once it's admitted, Spock, of course, would never think to back away from that truth.Even though these are sophisticated people, I don't think it's a stretch to depict them, in a situation such as this, with this sweet kind of awkwardness as is done here in such a lovely way. The already established friendship can be felt underlying, yet they are shy and embarrassed with each other because of the circumstances. So sweet it just warms my heart. Vulnerability such as this in these gorgeously strong, heroic characters is utterly beautiful.
Suspend your disbelief as to their ending up in a little storage closet to do the deed. I guess the need was urgent enough to not want to go back to their quarters — and whose quarters anyway would they choose? (Psychological dynamics can tend to get in the way — at least for a writer — when having to decide something such as this--whose domain you should put them in.)
Anyway, the tight confines enhance the scene. The dialogue is just perfect here, too, and so moving. The love as deep as space, even here just at the beginning of its expression.
But then, the sex following this is not shown at all. It's told afterwards in Spock's narrative, which could have been okay, but it's not quite made clear what specifically they did, just that it was urgent and loving. Still, I loved this story. Even doing this LOC has been stimulating in this beautiful way K/S has... [2]
