History
Started as a joke by @teenscientist on TikTok[1][2]
I don’t know who started it (though I have an idea of how it caught on) where people started talking about this character who, despite being extremely important in the original novel, got cut out completely when the story got adapted from book to screen. And since every subsequent adaptation uses the movie as The Source Material instead of the book, only true fans of the franchise would know of this character and not just her significance to the plot, but how fucking good she really was.The joke is that there is no novel. The movie is, in fact, the first and original source, and this character was used as a vehicle to troll newbies who got in through the most popular adaptation (which is significantly different from its predecessor) and don’t know/don’t care to know about what came before.

There’s the movie in the 1980s, cult classic as it is.
Then there’s the musical from the 2010s and is still going on today, but mainly in the UK (West End was the first). Since bringing it over the pond, it got a significant rewrite (not that the Off-Broadway wasn’t already different from the movie to begin with) and this version is (for better or worse) considered the official script for the show. (It’s coming back to the states this year, and Lord, I am Afraid.)
The musical is undoubtedly more accessible and catchier than the R-Rated satirical movie, considering all the songs and the streamlining, which means there’s a lot of minors running around, many of whom don’t care to watch the movie because it’s “old” and “outdated” and “boring” etc.
Enter people talking about Heather Schneider (on TikTok iirc, because of course), the fourth Heather who was the actual leader of the clique, and if you actually read the book like a true fan you’d know that! So people who saw these videos would make responses gushing about omg Heather S was so cool actually and how dare they remove her!! #justice4heathers
