Moa is a Japanese character designer and one of the creators of Hatoful Boyfriend. In 2017, they helped with the official Japanese translation of Undertale.

As A Fan

Moa is well known for their fanworks and regularly hosts fanart requests on Twitter. Their fanart tag is #FanartMoa810, however it is regularly misused by spambots.

Prior to working on Undertale in 2017, Moa was prominent in the fandom as an already well-known artist. While many of their fanworks survive on their website, they have deleted all slash pairing art. The majority of their slash art had been of Mettablook. Moa was particularly involved with fellow Hatoful creator, Damu, who was also a big fan of the same pairing.

They're also well known for their Great Ace Attorney fanworks.

Profic career

In 2007, Moa created the manga Vairocana, which was discontinued after 3 volumes.

In 2011, Moa and Damu released Hatoful Boyfriend for personal computer. The game was translated to English and put on Gumroad, leading to mass interest on YouTube for the memetic potential of dating birds. The game would gain a cult following over the years due to the surprising depth in the game.

In 2017, Moa was hired to assist in translating Undertale to Japanese, as they speak English and Japanese and were already a big fan of the game.

For the 2020 game Murder by Numbers, Moa was hired as the lead artist.

For the 2021 game Boyfriend Dungeon, Moa was the character designer for Rowan and their bird, Crowley.

Controversy

Moa's Opinions on Incest

In 2015, Moa and Damu, who created Hatoful Boyfriend, were involved in Undertale fandom, having created Mettablook fan content. The characters, Mettaton and Napstablook, are canonically cousins, making the ship incest, and Moa was pulled up on this. Moa said they didn't see an issue with cousin incest, and made a couple of tweets on the subject. They have since been deleted. However, there was a strong response from fans.

idk if y'all saw The Discourse on hatoful boyfriend creator moa’s twitter today/yesterday but basically i’m gonna talk about that briefly

so they said they’re okay with cousins being in relationships with each other both in fiction and outside of fiction and compared stigma against it to homophobia and i’m honestly willing to forgive them for that because they were raised in a part of the world where that’s pretty acceptable???

but i’m also really unsure because they were really adamant about talking down people who are made uncomfortable by that stuff so idk

idk

it’s a really gross situation

@moa810 incest is a really touchy subject here in america and is usually seen as disgusting

ateliermatangi on twitter

@moa810 the thing with it is that in the west (or at least the us) cousins in relationships still counts as incest (tho from what i understand it doesn't count as such in japan) and incest is something that most people see as morally wrong, esp since most cases of it are against the will of one of the participants. that obviously does not count for consensual relationships but the squick factor still remains for a lot of people regardless. and like thats how it is for me personally. i think the big thing is that its a difference in cultures and while it does kinda make me uncomfortable ive been trying not to be judgey bc! it's different in japan and that doesnt necessarily make it wrong! sorry if this was dumb or too rambling or if i didn't say smth

@moa810 it's still the kind of relationship in which these things happen. making it all cute trivializes the reality

chaIkflint on twitter

Am I reading this right? Did the writer of Hatoful Boyfriend spend like a day tweetstorming in favor of the morality of incest?
